Case Study: Vital First Aid Saves a Life at Industree Group Stadium

Overview

On a February evening at the Industree Group Stadium in Gosford, a routine night of NRL pre-season footy quickly turned into a life-or-death emergency. Thanks to the swift response of bystanders who commenced CPR, followed by the Vital First Aid Event Medical team who continued CPR and initiated the use of the defibrillator, a life was saved — showcasing the critical importance of on-site medical readiness and high-quality training.

The Incident

Danielle Martin, a lifelong South Sydney Rabbitohs supporter, had travelled from Sydney to Gosford with her fiancé Jamie to watch her beloved team take on the Manly Sea Eagles. While walking around the stadium, Danielle suddenly collapsed — suffering a cardiac arrest.

Bystanders began CPR while stadium staff called in the on-site Vital First Aid team. Responders Tim, Aaron, and Dave acted quickly, deploying a HeartSine defibrillator to deliver life-saving shocks. Their timely and precise intervention kept Danielle alive until paramedics arrived and transported her to Gosford Hospital for advanced care.

The Outcome

Danielle made a full recovery and, just weeks later, returned to Industree Group Stadium to personally thank the medical team that saved her life. In an emotional reunion, she embraced Tim, Aaron, and Dave, saying:

“THANK YOU for saving my life. Words cannot express my gratitude!”

In a generous act of gratitude, Danielle donated a brand-new HeartSine defibrillator to the stadium through the manufacturer’s Forward Hearts Program, ensuring even greater coverage and preparedness for future emergencies.

Venue Manager Kath Casey accepted the defibrillator, acknowledging the importance of having well-trained professionals and quality equipment readily available at all major events.

The Bigger Picture

With over 13,000 fans in attendance that night, the presence of trained responders and life-saving equipment was critical. This case underscores:

  • The value of on-site medical services at public venues
  • The importance of first aid and CPR training
  • The real-world impact of rapid response and defibrillator access
